On April 9, 1940 Nazi Germany initiated Operation Weserubung against Norway, quickly establishing a foothold in Oslo and Trondheim. Although the Royal Family was able to flee and establish a government in exile, Norway capitulated and remained under military occupation until the end of the War in Europe on May 8, 1945.
