A Turning Point in Indonesia’s Fight for Freedom

On August 17, 1945 - just two days after Japan’s surrender - President Sukarno boldly proclaimed Indonesia’s independence from both the Netherlands and its wartime occupiers. Although World War II was ending, Indonesia’s struggle was just beginning. A four-year conflict with the Netherlands followed, including a naval blockade that isolated the new nation from the world.

Yet even under blockade, Indonesia managed to assert its identity. The government commissioned the Austrian State Printers to create striking new stamps celebrating independence - stamps that were secretly smuggled into the country and distributed to local post offices.

After the liberation of Jakarta in 1949 and Sukarno’s release from prison, several earlier issues were overprinted to commemorate the victory. This dramatic pictorial airmail set features aircraft, pilots, and mechanics against the Indonesian landscape—a vivid window into a young nation asserting its place in the world. Long overlooked by collectors, this series is now gaining rapid attention. (Indonesia #C47–55)
