#3186 - 1940s World War II Transforms America - Set of 15
The fear of war became a reality for America on December 7th 1941, when the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service launched an assault on the U.S. Naval base in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Over 16 million men and women served in the United States military, joining forces with the Allied Powers to topple Adolf Hitler’s Nazi regime. The second half of the decade saw the creation of NATO and the United Nations and the start of the Cold War. The end of World War II led to a significant increase in the birthrate, creating what would become known as the Baby Boomer generation. The 1948 Summer Olympics marked the resuming of the event, previously placed on hold due to the ongoing war. Swing music and Film Noir were popular forms of entertainment, though swing began to give way to the styles of bebop and rock and roll by the end of the decade.
