Great Britain Downey Heads - 1911-1912 First King George V Re-engraved Issues

Known as the “Downey Heads” after the photographer of the King’s portrait, these King George V issues utilized an unusual ¾ profile. Issued on Coronation Day, June 22, 1911, complaints of the shading in the King’s face forced a re-engraving seven months later with lighter shading. In late 1912 new stamps picturing a side profile of the King appeared, and were in use for the remainder of his reign. Great Britain 153-54
