France WW II Liberation - 1944 Complete Mint Set of 19
Known as the “Algiers Issue” because they were printed there in 1944 by the French resistance while France was still under Nazi control, these stamps were first used in liberated Corsica and then available throughout France after the liberation of Paris. The designs feature two French icons: the Gallic cock and Marianne, the allegorical symbol of freedom, as well as the double-barred Cross of Lorraine used by De Gaulle’s resistance movement.
