Printed in Paris, the early issues of Romania closely resemble the French stamps in use at the time. This top value of the 1872 issue pictures Prince Carol I, the first ruler of Romania after its independence from the Ottoman Empire. Proclaimed King in 1881, he ruled Romania until 1914.
