Marsh Is.#303 MacArthur Evacuates Corregidor - 1992 Imperforate Mint Issue

March 11, 1942 With the inevitable fall of the Philippines to the Japanese, Washington officials decided to evacuate General MacArthur from Corregidor to the safety of Australia. His loyalty to his troops was so great he considered resigning his command to stay and fight alongside his men. MacArthur placed General Jonathan Wainwright in command of the remaining forces, promising them: “If I make it through, you know I’ll come back as soon as I can, with as much as I can.” Along with his wife and son plus 17 staff officers, MacArthur secretly slipped away on the evening of March 11, 1942 in four PT boats, making the first leg of the journey to the island of Mindanao — a treacherous 600-mile voyage through rough seas, shallow reefs and Japanese patrol boats. From Mindanao they flew to Australia.
