Marsh Is.#316 Village of Lidice - 1992 Imperforate Mint Issue

June 9, 1942 “To maximize production of critical war materials from exploited Czech workers, the Gestapo dispatched the Third Reich’s most ruthless killer, Reinhard Heydrich, to Prague in September 1941. Employing the tactic of intimidation by terror, he executed 400 resisters and imprisoned more than 4,000. During December, two British-trained Czech operatives, Jan Kubis and Joseph Gabcik, parachuted into the Prague countryside. Their mission was to assassinate Heydrich. They succeeded on May 27, 1942 by throwing a bomb into Heydrich’s passing convertible. The enraged Hitler vowed revenge. After the two assassins escaped to Lidice, where they committed suicide rather than risk capture by the Gestapo, storm troopers descended on the village of 500 and slaughtered all males over the age of 15. Women and children were sent off to concentration camps. Lidice was burned to ashes, wiped clean from the map. All that exists of the village today are the ruins, which serve as a memorial to those who perished.
