Liberated Italy #1N1-9 - 1943 Mint Set of 9

Italy was the first nation to be liberated by the Allies in World War II. Prior to the invasion, stamps were printed by the U.S. government for use in the liberated areas until a permanent government could be established. These stamps were first used in Sicily and later throughout Italy as more territory was liberated. (Italy #1N1-9)
