Marsh Is.#326 Battle of El Alamein - 1992 Imperforate Mint Issue

October 23, 1942 In the spring of 1941, General Erwin Rommel and his Afrika Korps went on the offense in North Africa to regain territory lost by their Italian allies. Rommel’s mission was to capture the Suez Canal and control the oil-rich Middle East. By August 1942, the British had been pushed back to El Alamein, located 60 miles west of Alexandria, Egypt. Prime Minister Churchill ordered a change in command for the British 8th Army, appointing General Bernard Montgomery to defend the strategic British interests in North Africa. On October 23, the British began pounding the German lines and after 10 days Rommel was forced to retreat. Over the next 7 months, the British 8th Army had advanced more than 2,000 miles, forcing Rommel’s weary troops to retreat into Tunisia. The Axis losses in Africa were staggering: 950,000 soldiers killed or captured, 8,000 aircraft disabled, 6,200 artillery guns and 2,550 tanks lost.
