1917 Christmas Seal - US #WX19 Mint NH

A Century-Old Mint Holiday Fundraiser!

The earliest U.S. Christmas Seals were distributed by the American Red Cross. In 1920 the National Tuberculosis Association took over their distribution. Sold for a penny apiece at Red Cross locations and door to door by children, the 1917 issue raised $1.8 million to fight tuberculosis and other lung diseases. Without a doubt, the funds raised by this seal also helped the Red Cross aid the millions of victims of the 1918 influenza epidemic.
Designed by noted illustrator Thomas Maitland Cleland, this festive holiday charity issue pictures a snow-covered evergreen bearing a Red Cross shield. Add this early Christmas Seal, in mint never-hinged condition, to your collection at a special price! (#WX19)
