# 370 - 2¢ William Seward - carmine

William H. Seward, Secretary of State under Lincoln, negotiated the purchase of Alaska from Russia in 1867 for $7.2 million, or about 2 cents an acre. Feeling the United States got the worst of the bargain, opponents called it "Seward's Folly". This stamp was issued for the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition in Seattle. Scott 370 William Seward
