Raised in poverty, James Garfield sought an education and began his career as an educator. When the Civil War broke out, Garfield became a Union officer, leading brigades in Kentucky as well as the battles of Shiloh and Corinth. Nominated for the presidency in 1880, Garfield served the second shortest term in office when he was shot down by Charles J. Guiteau. Scott 825 James Garfield
