William Taft led a life of accomplishment prior to, during, and after his election to the Presidency. Prior to serving as President, Taft was a judge, Solicitor General, and president of the Philippine commission. As President, Taft continued Theodore Roosevelt's work as a trust buster and expanded the civil service. Taft served only one term as President, losing the 1912 election with only eight electoral votes. In 1921 Taft was appointed chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. Scott 831 William Taft
