# 817 - 12¢ Taylor: plate block

A war hero, Zachary Taylor was the first President never to have previously held elected office. Taylor, himself a slaveholder, opposed the spread of slavery into new territories and encouraged California and New Mexico to apply directly for statehood as free states.
