#2406 - 25¢ Phoenix - booklet single

The Phoenix was a steamboat built by John Stevens and his son in Hoboken, New Jersey in 1806. Phoenix became the first steamboat to sail the open ocean in 1809 on a trip from New York to Philadelphia. The move was dangerous but necessary as the steamboat industry in New York City was monopolized by Robert Fulton and Robert Livingston, making it impossible for Stevens to operate profitably.
