Built in 1855, The General was the subject of a heated locomotive chase after Union soldiers snuck aboard and commandeered the train as its Confederate crew was eating breakfast. After cutting telegraph lines so forces down the track could not be notified, the Union crew set off northbound at full steam, as Confederate forces pursued on foot and locomotive. The hijackers made it within 18 miles of Chattanooga before The General ran out of fuel and the Confederate forces closed in.
