During the 1930s Al Jolson was the highest paid man in the entertainment business. With an impressive voice and stage presence, he was the natural choice to star in the first full-length talking movie, "The Jazz Singer". Although Jolson was known to sometimes perform in blackface makeup, from the early 20th century he was an advocate for equal rights and anti-discrimination.
