#4982- (49¢) Gifts of Friendship - Sheet of 12
After President Theodore Roosevelt calmed tensions between Japan and Russia in 1909, averting what could have become the first World War, Japan thanked the United States with a gift of cherry trees. The gifted trees were unfortunately infested with pests and disease, and reluctantly had to be burned. Japan kindly gifted over 3000 more cherry trees to the US as a replacement, and President Howard Taft responded in kind in 1915 by sending 50 flowering dogwood trees to Japan. The Gifts of Friendship set honors the 100th anniversary of President Taft’s gift to Japan, depicting both the cherry trees and dogwood trees in front of US and Japanese locations.
