#5714 - Elephants
Elephants have fascinated us since their first appearance in the U.S. in 1796. We are drawn to these majestic creatures by their large, floppy ears, graceful movement, and their ability to show emotions but there is more to our attraction to them. They share many of the same traits as humans in terms of their social complexity and range of emotions.
As a herd, elephants work together and are able to show emotions like empathy and grief, forming life-long family bonds. Elephant herds are matriarchal societies, with calves raised and taught by the whole herd. We have become more aware of how we treat them and the adverse conditions they're often kept in, and passed laws to ban ivory imports and promoted conservation measures to ensure their well-being and survival.
