Ernest James Gaines (1933–2019) was an American author who achieved fame and critical acclaim in 1971 with his historical novel The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman, recounting the memories of a woman whose life story spans from slavery to the civil rights era. Dramatizing the horrific post-emancipation conditions endured by sharecroppers the novel was lauded for its accurate depiction of Southern history.
