Chief Standing Bear (1829-1908) was a Native American who grew up to become a chief in his tribe and a civil rights leader for Native Americans. In 1879 he won a landmark court ruling in U.S. District Court in Omaha that determined a Native American was a person under the law with an inherent right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
