Connecting Lake Superior with Lake Huron, the Sault Saint Marie Canal Locks or Soo Locks on this 8¢ Pan-American stamp allows ships and barges to bypass the rapids on the St. Mary's River. The locks are operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and allow inter-lake transportation all the way to the Atlantic Ocean via the modern St. Lawrence Seaway.
