One of the scarcest Washington-Franklin issues, this Type Ia was the result of an experiment to create a new method of transferring the master die to the printing plate, making the engraved lines of the design stronger and deeper than the Type I stamp.  This century-old stamp is most easily identified by its unique deep rose color.
