Newfoundland Explored - 1933 Complete Mint Set of 14

In 1583 Queen Elizabeth I granted a charter to Sir Humphrey Gilbert to explore the New World for potential English settlements. His fleet of five vessels reached Newfoundland, which he claimed for the British crown. This elaborate and attractive engraved set commemorates the 350th anniversary of the voyage. Much like the U.S. Columbian issue, this long, beautiful set shows scenes of the voyage, portraits of Gilbert and Queen Elizabeth I, and related artifacts.
