Upper Yafa First Issues - A Lost Nation With A Turbulent Story

Save 25% on this 1967 Complete Mint Set of 10

In the 1960s, the British attempted to end the feudal conflicts in the Arabian Peninsula by combining the warring sheikdoms into the Federation of South Arabia. The small Sultanate of Upper Yafa, located in Yemen, 60 miles north of the port of Aden, opted not to join the Federation and declared its own independence.

In September 1967 Upper Yafa issued their first - and only - stamps, incorporating the flag, map and coat of arms of this 600 square mile nation. Within months, the National Liberation Front absorbed the region into South Yemen. Today, this same volatile area in the Middle East is again in the news with Houthi rebels. Own a vivid reminder of Yemen’s long struggle with conflict and change with this historic Upper Yafa set!
