In the 1960s, the British attempted to end the feudal conflicts in the Arabian Peninsula by combining the warring sheikdoms into the Federation of South Arabia. The small Sultanate of Upper Yafa, located in Yemen, 60 miles north of the port of Aden, opted not to join the Federation and declared its own independence.

In September 1967 Upper Yafa issued their first postage stamps, incorporating the flag, map and coat of arms of this 600 square mile nation. Its freedom and that of the Federation would be short-lived as the rival National Liberation Front dominated and made all of the emirates, sultanates and sheikdoms of this politically tumultuous region unite to form the nation of South Yemen in November 1967.
