WWII Occupied Lorraine France #N43-58 - 1940 Complete Mint Set of 16

The ownership of Lorraine, strategically located in northeastern France bordering Germany, Belgium and Luxembourg, has been contested for hundreds of years. While it is now a part of France, during World War II it was occupied by Germany. German stamps picturing President Hindenburg were overprinted with the German spelling “Lothringen”. The importance of this region was shown when the Cross of Lorraine symbolized the French Resistance movement during the war. (France #N43-58)
