Marsh Is.#320 Marines Land on Guadalcanal - 1992 Imperforate Mint Issue

August 7, 1942 For the first time in the Pacific war, the Allied forces took to the offensive. Approximately 10,000 Marines, delivered by amphibious troop transports, stormed the north shore of the island of Guadalcanal and captured the airfield at Lunga Point. The Japanese, determined to reclaim this strategic position, sent thousands of troops from Rabaul, 500 miles to the northwest. To avoid being detected, subsequent beach landings were made under the cover of darkness. After ten months of bloody fighting the Japanese had lost more than 30,000 soldiers on the “Island of Death” while the Allies lost 7,100. This victory showed that the strategy of island hopping was necessary to defeat the Japanese. By seizing a few key islands and establishing air bases, the Allies could avoid invading the major Japanese fortifications. Once the enemy’s supply lines were cut and their air and naval forces were neutralized, these strongholds were isolated from Japan for the rest of the war.
