Yalta Conference - 1995 Mint Imperforate Issue

February 4, 1945 During the seven-day summit at the Black Sea port of Yalta, President Roosevelt, Prime Minister Churchill and Premier Joseph Stalin hammered out a postwar treaty agreement and prepared for the aftermath of war. Their discussions included territorial rights concerning the occupation of Germany, the new Polish government and the Soviet Union’s admission to the United Nations. More important was the secret promise from Stalin that he would join the Allied war effort against Japan once Germany surrendered. In return for his support, he demanded the preservation of Soviet dominance in Outer Mongolia and possession of the Kurile Islands north of Japan. Both Roosevelt and Churchill agreed to these demands, feeling strongly that the Red Army’s presence in the Far East was essential to winning the war against Japan.
