Winston Churchill Resigns - 1995 Mint Imperforate Issue

July 26, 1945 Although Winston Churchill was regarded as a great hero for his efforts during the war, he and the Conservative party were voted out of office shortly after Germany surrendered. The British people believed that a new Prime Minister might relieve some of the harsh economic conditions brought on by six years of conflict. Churchill had returned to Britain from postwar negotiations to hear the disappointing election results. When asked if he was hurt by the public’s lack of gratitude, he replied, "The people are entitled to vote as they please. This is a democracy. This is what they have been fighting for." His one regret was not being permitted to finish the fight against Japan. In October 1951, at the age of 77, Churchill was reelected Prime Minister and served for almost four more years. That same year, he won the Nobel Prize in literature for his six-volume chronicle of World War II.
