#2195 - $2 William J. Bryan

William Jennings Bryan was one of the most popular public speakers in American history. A devout Presbyterian, Bryan's name has become synonymous with populism and religious zeal. Bryan made several bids for the Presidency, but was never successful. Bryan was a powerful opponent of Darwinism and the teaching of evolution in public schools. In 1925 he prosecuted the Scopes Trial. Although he won the case, he received bad press. He died in his sleep five days after the trial ended. Scott 2195 William J. Bryan
