#2620 - 29¢ Isabella's Support

Before embarking on his voyage to the New World, Christopher Columbus needed financial support and backing. First, he tried appealing to the King of Portugal, but his proposed plan to sail west in search of the Orient was rejected. He was similarly unsuccessful in petitioning the King of England for help. However, Spain's King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella agreed to provide the additional financing he desperately needed and in 1492 Columbus set sail with the Niña, Pinta and Santa María.
