Originally coined as a commentary on the mental health of England’s “Mad” King George III, the King & Queen of Hearts became symbols of love under the reign of Queen Victoria. Charles Lamb published the nursery rhyme “The King and Queen of Hearts” in 1805 as a piece of political satire, mocking the royal family and King George in particular. King George suffered from porphyria, a mental disorder that manifested in seizures, hallucinations, and paranoia. Ironically, Lamb suffered from the same disease as the Mad King. The King and Queen of Hearts were later adapted into characters for Lewis Carroll's "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" novel. Scott 4404-05 King & Queen of Hearts
