#4408 - 44¢ Anna Julia Cooper

In a time where women and people of color were not afforded the same educational opportunities as white men, Anna Julia Cooper (1858-1964) openly defied societal norms in an effort to receive a more substantial education. Born into slavery, she began her educational studies at the age of nine, and defied societal norms by continuing to push for higher education. She fought her way through discrimination and was eventually able to take courses reserved only for men. Her academic prowess allowed her to attain a master’s degree in mathematics and a PhD in in history. Her written works are considered to be the founding of Black Feminist Literature.
