#3178 - $3 Mars Pathfinder

Launched on December 4, 1996, The Pathfinder project demonstrated “proof-of-concept” for various technologies proposed in the field of space exploration. The Sojourner rover, named for African-American abolitionist and women’s rights activist Sojourner Truth, landed on the surface of Mars on July 4th, 1997. Sojourner operated for a duration of 83 Martian days, or sols, and sent 550 photographs back to NASA before communication with the rover was lost nearly three months later. The mission was deemed a great success, having accomplished all of its objectives within the first month of operation.  This stamp features the Sojourner rover,  and is the first image sent back from the Pathfinder module. Despite all of the information collected by Pathfinder, there is still much to learn about the red planet. Scott 3178 Mars Pathfinder
