#4269 - $16.50 Hoover Dam

Originally known as the Boulder Dam, Congress authorized the commencement of the dam’s construction to alleviate flooding along the Colorado River. The winning bid to construct the dam was placed by Six Companies, Inc., and while faced with issues such as extreme heat, untested building techniques, and a lack of local facilities, still managed to complete the $49 million project two years ahead of schedule. In addition to preventing flooding, the dam also provides irrigation water and hydroelectric power to areas of Nevada, Arizona, and California.
