US #3L2 Allen’s City Dispatch - 1882 Mint Never-Hinged Local Post Issue

The short-lived Allen’s City Dispatch began operation in November 1882, delivering letters and circulars in Chicago’s business district. Undercutting post office rates, owner Edward Allen did a thriving business, but by February 1883 the Post Office shut him down, exercising their monopoly on letter and circular delivery. This unusual stamp, depicting Father Time, paid the circular rate. (US #3L2)
