#2622 - 29¢ Approaching Land
Early on the morning of October 12th 1492 the captain of the Pinta sighted a fire on land and signaled to the other ships. Columbus maintains that he spotted land a few hours prior, thus collecting the lifetime pension offered by the King Ferdinand to the first person to sight what would become known as the new world. The Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria soon anchored and landing parties went ashore on the present day island of San Salvador in the Bahamas. Scott 2622 Approaching Land
