One of the first African-American's to receive a doctorate in chemistry and the first to be inducted into the National Academy of Sciences, by the end of his career Percy Lavon Julian would have more than 130 different drug patents to his name. His work with soy proteins led to the development of Aer-O-Foam, a firefighting foam used by the Navy which is credited with saving thousands of lives during WWII. His later work on synthesizing hormones and steroids would earn him a place in the National Inventors Hall of Fame and named one of the "Hundred Greatest African Americans".
