"Ma" Rainey began performing at the age of 12 and would become known as the "Mother of the Blues" over the course of her 37 year career. She was known for a booming, powerful voice that would "wail" and "moan" the blues, and she spent time touring with some of the best musicians of the time including Louis Armstrong.
