#4124 - 39¢ Henry Longfellow

Poet and educator, whose accomplishments were previously recognized in the Famous American series in 1940, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882) is once again honored on this 2007 issue. After graduating college at age 18, he travelled across Europe to study the French, Spanish, and Italian languages, becoming the first American to translate Dante Alighieri’s “Divine Comedy.” Known for such works as “Paul Revere’s Ride,” “The Song of Hiawatha,” and “Evangeline,” he has been called the “uncrowned poet laureate” of the 19th century.
