Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990) was one of the first American conductors to achieve worldwide acclaim. Music director of the New York Philharmonic, he conducted concerts with most of the world's leading orchestras, and wrote scores for many movies and plays including West Side Story, Candide, On the Waterfront, and On the Town.
