Marsh Is.#479 Invasion of Anzio - 1994 Imperforate Mint Issue

January 22, 1944 The campaign to capture Rome had slowed to a bloody crawl. Rugged mountain terrain and fierce resistance kept the Allies from breaking through the enemy lines. To end the impasse, the Allies made a bold amphibious landing on the beaches of Anzio behind the German lines. The objectives of this flanking operation were to sever the highways supplying the Germans at the front and capture the hills around Rome, thereby forcing the enemy to surrender the city. Having established the Anzio beachhead, the next move of the Allies was to strike out for the two main arteries — the Appian Way and the Via Casilina – over which supplies flowed to the Germans. But bad January weather caused a stalemate on all points of the front. Even though losses were extensive, the operation was considered a success since it forced the Germans to transfer troops and resources from the Russian front and the coast of France.
