Marsh Is.#482 Japanese Defeated at Truk - 1994 Imperforate Mint Issue

February 17, 1944 With the recent success at Kwajalein, the U.S. quickened its push toward Japan, giving the enemy no time to fortify its inner defenses. Eniwetok Island, located at the northern end of the Marshall chain, was targeted for the next attack. The Japanese air and navy base at Truk, a group of islands some 700 miles to the west in the Caroline Islands, posed a serious threat to the success of the Marshall Islands campaign. In order to neutralize that threat, Fast Carrier Task Force 58 — under Rear Admiral Marc Mitscher — launched 30 bombing and strafing runs on Truk’s airfields. At the same time Marines started their invasion of Eniwetok. The two operations were highly successful. Eniwetok was taken with minimal losses and the base at Truk had been badly damaged, no longer posing a strategic threat to U.S. operations.
