Marsh Is.#492 U.S. Liberates Guam - 1994 Imperforate Mint Issue

July 21, 1944 The devastating Japanese naval loss in the Philippine Sea gave the U.S. the advantage of an uncontested amphibious landing on the island of Guam. Once ashore, however, the Marines faced heavy resistance as the enemy fiercely held their ground. Just like the fighting on Saipan, the battle ended in a massive suicidal counterattack by the Japanese, most of them armed only with knives and clubs. Fatalities were enormous; roughly 26,000 Japanese lost their lives. Reclaiming Tinian and Guam, the first American possession lost early in the war, were critical to the U.S. war effort. The air base at Tinian launched the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bomb missions.
