After losing her only 2 children, Mary Breckinridge dedicated her life to the foundation of the Frontier Nursing Service and the establishment of family care centers throughout the Appalachian Mountains. After studying midwifery in Europe, Breckinridge returned home to Kentucky to establish her own midwifery school.
