#2950 - 32¢ Florida Sesquicentennial

Order Pre-cut Mounts 40 x 25 mm - 40 per pack

Native people have inhabited the peninsula of Florida for over 14,000 years, and it was home to Spanish, British and French colonies during the 16th to 19th centuries. However in 1845 Florida was deemed the 27th state and admitted to the Union. Known as "the sunshine state" Florida grew a strong agricultural economy producing cotton and tobacco. Just before the onset of the Civil War almost 45% of Florida's population was African-American slaves working to support these plantations. Florida celebrated its Sesquicentennial in 1995, and while the tropical peninsula still produces many crops, slavery has been abolished, and tourism at the state's sandy beaches and theme parks brings in millions of visitors each year.
