After 29 ships were lost on Lake Superior during the Mataffa Storm of 1905, the United States Lighthouse Services responded by starting construction of the Split Rock Lighthouse. Perched atop a rocky 130ft cliff, the Split Rock Lighthouse has been a favorite subject of painters and photographers.
