#4374 - 42¢ Alaska Statehood

Honoring its 1959 admission as our 49th state, the United States purchased Alaska for $7.2 million from Russia in 1867. An interesting feature to note, this U.S. stamp illustrates a person who is still alive. Iditarod competitor DeeDee Jonrowe is shown here completing in the grueling dog-sled race in the year 2000. Alaska is the largest, northernmost, and westernmost state in the union, and also holds the most easterly longitude due to the Aleutian Islands extending into the Eastern Hemisphere.
