A central image in the Catholic and Orthodox churches, the Post Office has traditionally issued holiday stamps depicting the Virgin Mary accompanied by the baby Jesus since 1966. This year’s issue features the classic pair as portrayed by artist Giovanni Battista Salvi, who was more commonly known by the name of his hometown “Sassoferrato.” His style is renowned for the feeling of gentle intimacy projected into each of his works, particularly in a time where the majority of religious icons were described as rigid and melancholy.
